Check user rights assignment powershell

Kinda new to powershell, have looked at a lot of scripts along these lines but can't quite work out how to acheive what I want. I have written a script that creates users, creates some folders, sets permissions, all works fine. I want to check before I assign permissions, if a specific user already has permissions to the folder at all. I just can't work out the syntax for this - I'm doing a Get-Acl and updating the result to apply permissions, but I can't work out how to query that for existing entries by username.
